Street Talk Defensive Driving Course

Street Talk is a Waka Kotahi NZTA approved Defensive Driving Course that reduces the restricted licence period by 6 months for drivers under 25 (or 3 months if you are over 25).

The course teaches you how to recognise hazards on the roads and how to avoid dangerous situations that lead to accidents.

Street Talk Logbook

It is an intensive and interactive course comprising of 4 x two-hour classroom sessions followed by a one-hour practical on-road session. The drive is completed in your own vehicle.

Session one - The total driving picture (2 hours)

  • Raising awareness of your own perception of yourself as a safe driver

  • Recognising links between personal wellbeing and safe driving.

Session two - Risk and reality (2 hours)

  • Distinguishing between deliberate and unintentional risk-taking

  • Describing how human risk factors affect a driver’s perception of and response to risk

  • Establishing realistic views of risks and consequences for novice drivers

  • Increasing awareness of personal risk-taking.

Session three - Managing change (2 hours)

  • Practising skills to become an in-control driver with a safe driving record

  • Recognising the challenges of making changes to driving responses and habits

  • Reframing mistakes as learning opportunities.

Session four - Hazards (2 hours)

  • Preparing for the practical on road session

  • Exploring the concepts of “Hazard Perception” and “Getting the Big Picture”

  • Developing strategies to address these issues.

Session five - Practical drive (1 hour to be completed within 60 days of session 4)

  • Practising the driving and hazard perception skills required to pass the Full Licence Test

Students must attend all sessions in order and cannot continue if they miss a session.

You will be provided with a logbook of the course content and assignments.

On completion of all the assignments and the practical drive, you will receive a certificate for presenting to the testing officer enabling you to sit the full licence test after 12 months instead of 18 if you are under 25, or after 3 months instead of 6 months if you are over 25.

The course is best suited for students on a restricted driver licence. If you are on your learner licence you may be able to complete the course but you will need access to a supervisor to do the practical assignments. You will also need to have a minimum of 30 hours driving experience before starting the course.

The cost of the course is $240 per student  for a group of 6 to 20 students. If you would like Matthew to deliver a Street Talk course in your school or community please contact me.

"Was a good few classes. Matthew was really understandable and gave some great pointers!"
